Today we celebrate the 82nd birthday of Pope Francis.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on 17 December 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Mario José Bergoglio and Regina María Sívori. Mario was born in Portacomaro, Italy and Regina was born in Buenos Aires to a family from northern Italy. The Bergoglio family left Italy in 1929 under the rule of Benito Mussolini. Jorge has four siblings Alberto, Oscar, Marta, and María.
During his childhood, he spent much time with his grandmother Rosa. She would take him home with her, and he would spend all day there. She taught him to pray and about the lives of the saints. He was raised Roman Catholic and grew up speaking Italian and Spanish.
In the sixth grade, Jorge attended Wilfrid Barón de Los Santos Ángeles, a school of the Salesians de Don Bosco, in Ramos Mejía, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He attended the technical secondary school Escuela Técnica Industrial Número 27 Hipólito Yrigoyen and graduated with a chemical technician’s diploma. Jorge worked as a bar bouncer, as a janitor sweeping floors, and ran tests in a chemical laboratory. At 21 he suffered from life-threatening pneumonia and three cysts. He had part of his right lung removed shortly afterward.
